Colleges and universities often ask you for converted scores within the TOEFL exams in order to suit the system they follow. Most colleges have not been keen on updating their system even after CBT and iBT came into the picture and this demands that the test-takers learn the process of conversion than remain clueless while sending information regarding the scores.

The chart below can be used to convert/compare scores. Some Universities require a minimum score of 250/600 (CBT/PBT), some have a requirement of 213 (CBT) or 550 (PBT). Some require a score of 115 (iBT) for TA/RA.

The three different types of TOEFL have been designed by ETS through the years. The PBT or paper-based test was the only test available in the beginning and it was followed by the CBT (computer-based test) and eventually by iBT (internet-based test) which came up during the pandemic.

You may feel that a PBT test is easier than the iBT since it deals mostly with grammar and lacks a speaking section. But these factors can weigh you down if you choose to take the PBT over the iBT because training for the speaking section can ultimately benefit you in your academic discourses.

Colleges and universities may demand that you take a particular kind of test. So consider your options before you register for the test. In case you have taken the iBT test when a PBT or CBT is required, knowing the conversion table can help you calculate your score and know where you stand.
